Week 3 AfricanAmericanTimelinePart1/2/3

Event-1758-The African Baptist or "Bluestone" Church is founded on the William Byrd plantation near the Bluestone River, in Mecklenburg Virginia, becoming the first known black church in North America. Comment: The impact this event had on the Black Family was the forming of groups and forcing the family dynamic to come together in faith and be strong amongst one another. The black church created sort of a safe haven or a safe house and back then it was also a temple for political movements, community outreach, and many other things for the black family and the community to form an even bigger and stronger family dynamic. Event-1959- Lorraine Hansberry's "Raisin in the Sun" is the first play by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway. Comment: The production of a "Raisin in the Sun" showed empowerment of the black family as well as african american women. The actual story of a "Raisin in the Sun" depicts a black family, although at their lowest, stuck together despite greed and self-pity. It showed how even though women are the glue that holds african american families together, the men of the family have to be proud of themselves and who they are in order to pass that self-pride and self-worth down to the next generations. Nguzo Saba: (1) Imani- (faith)- "To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaderrs and the righteousness and victory of our struggle." (2)- Kuumba- (creativity)- "To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it." - In the "Dynamic Duo" piece I believe Ujamaa- (cooperative economics) and Umoja-(unity) were present because although the family had grown up in a middle-class environment, they continued to stay true to themselves and when they got to the point where they could actually give back, they provided for their community and stuck close to their community to be positive role models for the next generations as well as their own kids. - In the Harvey article I believe that Nia-(purpose) was the main aspect of the article because the goal of the social worker of african american family is to instill a purpose for life, pride and responsibility to the traditional sense of who we are as african americans.

I like that you brought this up about the Black church. I think it was one of the key parts of gaining freedom among enslaved Africans and for the Civil Rights Movement. The Black church made many things possible that would have been hard without its organization!
